One of the toughest and grittiest of films noir, BORN TO KILL stars tough-guy Lawrence Tierney, best known onscreen for his leading roles in this film and DILLINGER (1945), and best known off-screen for as many altercations with the law as his onscreen characters.  A shockingly brutal film for 1947, BORN TO KILL is dominated by Tierney as a coldly amoral killer, and Claire Trevor as the nearly-as-bad dame who can't help but love him.  Hard to believe this film was made by the same Robert Wise who later went on to direct THE SOUND OF MUSIC and STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.  4½ -  JL
