THE NAME OF THE ROSE Adapted from Umberto Eco's
novel, this murder
mystery set in a 14th-century monastery features Sean Connery as a
nonconformist monk reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes and named,
appropriately enough, William of Baskerville. It's a
compelling
film, although thematically muddled and visually
inconsistent.
Director Jean-Jacques Annaud allows dark, torch-and-candle-lit scenes
to pass for style, then ends everything by indulging in some Ken
Russell flamboyance. The film works best if you don't let
Annaud
distract you and instead concentrate on the story and some grand
scenery-chewing by an eclectic cast.
