Whatever happened to
Winona Ryder? With her
cute, dark and quirky presence firmly established in films like
BEETLEJUICE,
WELCOME HOME ROXIE CARMICHAEL and MERMAIDS, she was the
poster child for existential loners everywhere. She went on
to
star in many a good movie, such as EDWARD SCIZZORHANDS, BRAM STOKER'S
DRACULA, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE and LITTLE WOMEN.
Then came her magnum opus,
GIRL INTERRUPTED,
the film upon which she pinned all her hopes and dreams. Next
thing you know, Angelina Jolie walks away with the accolades and awards
for that one and Noni's reduced to playing Adam Sandler's girlfriend in
the despicable DEEDS. After that, she's caught on video
clearly
shoplifting from a department store, Hollywood (who apparently finds
this crime more intolerable than any other) turns its back one her and
she has hardly been seen since.
Oh, well, we still have
HEATHERS. Aside
from BEETLEJUICE, which is more of Michael Keaton's movie, HEATHERS is
the quintessential Winona Ryder film. It also features young
Christian Slater, the boy voted most likely to grow up to become Jack
Nicholson. HEATHERS is a teen comedy, but there's no sweetness and
charm as in a John Hughes film. Instead, HEATHERS is all
cynical
and dark, and with its story about one outcast killing off fellow
students, it also turned out to be sadly prophetic.
