CAPTAIN BLOODThen an unknown Aussie just signed with Warner Brothers, Errol Flynn became a major star in his first film, CAPTAIN BLOOD. Joining him in the ranks of stardom was Olivia De Havilland, in what was only her fourth film. So good were these two together, they would costar in seven more films, including THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD.
CAPTAIN BLOOD is a classic swashbuckler with
as rousing a pirate battle as you will ever see serving as its climax.
With costars Lionel Atwill and Basil Rathbone (doing a French
accent that surely inspired John Cleese's insulting Frenchman in MONTY
PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL), crisp direction by Michael Curtiz, and a cast filled to the brim
with Warner Brothers character actors such as Guy Kibbee, Donald
Meek and Donald Crisp, the film is almost guaranteed to please on every level. They don't make 'em like this any more,
although they do remake them, as one is being planned for 2010 ---
possibly set in space. Good grief!
